When did you join Green Fuel Nordic?

I have been with Green Fuel Nordic since March 2012.

I have mainly worked in wastewater and sludge treatment capacities at paper and board plants in Finland and Sweden. I’ve also worked in challenging projects to advance the sustainable use of biomass and new business.

What kind of work do you do now?

My responsibility in the initial phase of the project has been to prepare and coordinate the various regulatory requirements and permit processes related to the biorefinery. My job description is broad and my duties are often challenging. In fact, learning new things is the best thing about my job.

What kind of workplace is Green Fuel Nordic?

In a young and agile company, the work load is divided as needed, and you can turn to the competent work community for advice and experience with any situation. I am motivated by the thought that my work is meaningful and that it advances the achievement of Finland's renewable energy targets and energy self-sufficiency. It’s great to be involved in the creation of a new, sustainable industry and jobs in Finland.

What will you be doing in five years?

Hopefully, I’ll be successfully balancing a happy family life and environmental tasks in a growing and internationalizing biorefinery company.

Name: Jerkko Starck
Age: 30
Education:  M.Sc. Energy Technology
Position: Project Engineer

When did you join Green Fuel Nordic?

My employment started on January 1, 2012, three months after the company was established.

Why did you join Green Fuel Nordic?

Bio-oil was the focus of my master’s thesis; so after graduating, I was looking for a job where I could apply my knowledge. Unfortunately, at the time, Finland didn’t have any bio-oil projects under way, so I ended up working in the power plant environment. When Green Fuel Nordic was established and the opportunity to be involved in bio-oil emerged, I didn't have to think it twice. I packed up my belongings and moved to Kuopio. This is how my small circle closed and here I am.

What is your job like?

My job description is very diverse. I’m involved in almost all issues related to the biorefinery project, but things outside the project also keep me busy. My main areas of responsibility are maintaining and overseeing the project's budget, resources and timetable, as well as developing and managing documentation, reporting and IT systems.

Additionally, I have a practical role in all biorefinery project planning, implementation and project support functions. A project engineer's responsibilities also include more concise analysis projects and, when needed, also seminar presentations.

The best thing about my work is that I have an opportunity to influence things. Plus, every day is different and I constantly get to meet top professionals from different fields, so I gain expertise quickly.

What kind of workplace is Green Fuel Nordic?

The nature of project work is that sometimes the work days are very long, and sometimes you can take it a bit more relaxed. We have a good and inspiring work environment that encourages and enables professional development in your own field. And, of course, it’s great to be a part of making industry history in Finland!

What will you be doing in five years?

Five years from now I’ll already have several biorefinery projects behind me. By then, hopefully I will have gained so much more expertise that I can be a project director and build new biorefineries both in Finland and abroad.
